Polarization Maintaining Fiber Fusion Splicing

Polarization Maintaining (PM) fiber splicing with the Fitel S185 series fusion splicer is based on the polarization observation of the lens-effect-tracing (POL) method. With this technique, the most common types of PM fibers can be precision aligned even elliptical core, without end launch or detection: Panda, PureMode, TruePhase, HiBi (“Bowtie”), Tiger, and E-core.

These fiber are all aligned passively because the POL method permits an accurate estimation of the splice’s extinction ratio before and after actual splicing, the quality of the splice call be estimated without having to make an active measurement.
